1853-1922 British Leighton was the son of the artist Charles Blair Leighton. He was educated at University College School, before becoming a student at the Royal Academy Schools. He married Katherine Nash in 1885 and they went on to have a son and daughter. He exhibited annually at the Royal Academy from 1878 to 1920. Leighton was a fastidious craftsman, producing highly-finished, decorative pictures. Danish-born American Painter, 1853-1932 Soren Emil Carlsen (1853 ?C 1932) was an American painter associated with the Cos Cob Art Colony. Carlsen painted primarily landscapes and still lifes. His fastidiously painted still lifes are influenced by Chardin and often depict copper pans, game, or flowers. He was an art teacher for over fifty years; his students included James Swinnerton.
